Artist's Comments

Done. After just three months. :D

To think that I never wanted to do fan art...

I wanted to practice skeleton drawing and was searching for a way to do that in a non-boring, publishable way. A friend of mine suggested to illustrate a poem by Goethe, which had lots of dancing skeletons, but although I do like the poet very much, I immediately thought of a scene from the now-antique computer game "Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge". I started to sketch way back in August. Had I known how much effort this one demanded, I might not have finished this at all.

However, creating this was interesting, and I probably learnt quite much:

:pointr: I can paint either for web or for print. Not both at a time. This piece has a lot of nice textures, but one doesn't see them in web-friendly resolutions. Hopefully, it all comes back in print.

:pointr: This project was composed of 7 individual drawings on my sketchpad. Of course, a lot of detail was lost in the overpaint process, and that was a pity (I will post the original, detailed pencil skeleton sketches in my "scraps" section soon - for you to experience how much was lost exactly).
I must find a way to retain more of my original drawings in the finished piece. Black or colored outlines, for example. Ah, to hell with realism, that's probably not for me anyway.

:pointr: Fan art from scratch is a challenge of its own. How does one retain the original "feel" while adding own elements of style, and in this case also: detail and perspective (the original was a two-minute scene in a 1991 computer game, with VERY low resolution). I do like Guybrush Threepwood's face, as it came out in my effort.

:pointr: Painter X is not the tool for me. I used a 30-day trial version for this, yet not very effectively. The remaining 16 days of evaluation won't be put to use, I can tell you. What I need from Painter can be made in my "Essentials" version just as well.

Hope you like it!

Whoa, cool!! :wow: This is really impressive! Awesome work on the skeletons! I really like it! :+fav:
I just think Guybrush has too much of a beard here, and he has blue eyes, not green. But apart from that, great pic!
:iconneedleblade:
Yeah, I tried variations with a beard slightly less full, but it always turned out like somebody tore bushels out of his face ;)

Didn't come across his eye color in my research. I thought he looked nice with green eyes...

Thanks for your (second!!!) fav! :D :D
:iconbeekay84:
Well, actually, in the last scene of the first game, he and Elaine both have purple eyes... :wtf: But on the game box of MI1 and in MI4, he has blue eyes.
But anyways, you're welcome.
:iconneedleblade:
Maybe it's just the reflection of a certain parrot which made me think his eyes were green... :D :D :D
:iconbeekay84:
Hehe, could be... :D
:iconazurice:
I really love the detail on the skeletons here, a lot. :) And their poses. :XD: Guybrush's expression is also great. You've really gotten the style of the second game down (I always felt that if it were remade or anything, it would be much more realistic than the others, regardless of how surreal it is. :XD: )

And yeah, I have the painter X trial too. I found it a bit complicated and somewhat confusing, though maybe I didn't put enough time into it. ;P

Sorry I can't give more detailed crits/comments at the moment, I'm tired and not even sure if what I wrote makes sense. :XD:

No, honestly, there's so much sense in your words. :D

I am of the very same opinion. Monkey Island 2 (and 1, look at the face-closeups!) aimed at realism in many environments, which accounted for the incredible atmosphere unmatched by following games of the same series, last least. If MI2 was redone, it should be under surveillance of the original, now non-Lucas-Arts, people (namely Ron Gilbert), and should have an ultra-realistic, shamelessly "Pirates of the Caribbean" look. My prophecy is that you are of the very same opinion... ;)

Painter X... well, imitating traditional art materials was a borderline romantic thought I bought into. Unfortunately, the results have a rather generic feeling (was that a proper English word?) And worst of all: so many "lock" functions found in the very earliest versions of photoshop are entirely missing from Corel's supposed flagship. I found that embarrassing for the corporation, really.
:iconfreeport:
Very nice one!
I like the slight Monty Python-y look of Guybrush! And as someone who has seen the original sketches I must say that you should not post them as spraps, they're worth an own deviation each!

There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased that line.

Aww bad dreams! XD
